Show Love for the Bolsa Chica Wetlands

Our community is fortunate to have the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve and fortunate that there were dedicated individuals who, over 30 years ago, fought to save it from development. The Bolsa Chica Conservancy has been there since the beginning and we are proud of our work to preserve, protect and restore this precious open space. We believe that the Bolsa Chica Wetlands is more than a place. It is an experience, a sensory experience and, for some a spiritual experience.

The Bolsa Chica Conservancy is determined to make a better year out of 2021, and we are excited to share with you our new and revived virtual programs. Education staff is still busy with our Municiple Water District of Orange County (MWDOC) High School Water Education program and recently kicked off our Cal Naturalist program, expanding our education programs to college level students. We've also revived our ExperTalk series, join us as we present topics related to Bolsa Chica and other current day issues related to environmental conservation and ecology.

Executive staff is working diligently behind the scenes on the Interpretive Center Renovation Project. Architectural drawings and design plans are being finalized, and staff is currently reviewing proposals for the Interpretive Center exibitry design, fabrication, and installation. Materials for the final building and construction are going through a selection process, and we are ecstatic to be breaking ground later this year for this monumental project for the Bolsa Chica Conservancy. We will continue to share updates with you along the way to our new Interpretive Center!

Restoration staff still continue to work on Restoration projects on the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve and Harriett Wieder Regional Park. We are nearing breeding season and staff is currently wrapping up work on Rabbit Island for the season, removing non-native/invasive plant species and freeway iceplant. In addition to their surveys and work to remove non-native plant species, staff and volunteers worked to construct five nesting rafts for the Ridgway's rail, and will be deploying these at the end of the month in various locations around Rabbit Island. These nesting rafts will also be equipped with wildlife cameras, and we can't wait to share with you the exciting images we capture during the 2021 breeding season.

Work on the Conservancy's 10-acre restoration project site continues into 2021, as staff begin to ramp up their weed fighting efforts after our recent rains has caused a flush of new growth. With the recent lifting of the stay-at-home orders, we hope to continue work with small volunteer groups towards achieving our goals of 70% or more native plant coverage and less than 5% non-native/invasive speices cover.

Support the Bolsa Chica Conservancy by making a donation today in support of one of our many programs, Interpretive Center renovations or continued habitat restoration projects within Harriett Wieder Regional Park and the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve.
