As many of you have heard, a major oil spill of more than 126,000 gallons of crude oil, originating from a pipeline approximately 4.5 miles off the Coast of Orange County, landed at Huntington Beach and parts of Newport Beach on Sunday October 3rd. Reports have been received that some oil seeped into the Talbert Marsh prior to the deployment of containment booms, and cleanup efforts are already underway as of Sunday, October 3rd. The Bolsa Chica Wetlands have not been affected at this time, and we will keep everyone updated as more information becomes available.

Two Oiled Wildlife Care Network (OWCN) Recovery Teams were deployed on Sunday, October 3rd to search for, and recover any oiled wildlife. The full extent of the damage and impacts to wildlife are not known at this time, and it will take time until these impacts are fully realized, but is expected to be significant. Anyone observing oiled wildlife should not attempt to capture it, as crude oil is extremely toxic and handling wildlife requires special training and personal protection equipment. Instead please report observations of oiled wildlife to the oiled wildlife hotline at 1-877-UCD-OWCN (1-877-823-6926).

There is not much Bolsa Chic Conservancy volunteers can assist with at this time. The Unified Command has approved the use of pre-trained and affiliated volunteers with “spill response” training and special PPE. Public volunteers are not being requested at this time. For additional volunteer information, please visit https://calspillwatch.dfg.ca.gov/

The Bolsa Chica Conservancy is working closely with California Department of Fish & Wildlife, wildlife rehabilitation and clean-up organizations, and we are facilitating charitable donations of items to assist with response efforts. We have set up an Oil Spill Response Fund to raise monetary donations for this environmental emergency, that will be transferred to one or more of the organizations directly involved with the emergency response efforts.

All of the funds we raise will be donated to the organizations deployed in response to this oil spill and assisting affected wildlife.

Thank you for your generous support, your help is greatly appreciated and paramount to the cleanup efforts.
