Kayak Cleanup with the Bolsa Chica Conservancy

Join the Bolsa Chica Conservancy for a day of habitat restoration as we clean the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve waters via kayak!  Under normal circumstances, the use of recreational watercraft is prohibited in the BCER waters, but through a special agreement the BCC has with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, we are permitted the use of kayaks to access trash & debris that would otherwise be difficult or impossible to reach on foot.  The BCC is only allowed this outside of breeding season, which typically falls between the months of October to February, so the window of opportunity is relatively short.

The start and end times for a kayak cleanup vary depending on the tide levels on any particular day.  Please refer to the times shown on this page that relate to your event date for specific start and end times.

We recommend taking the following precautions to ensure you are ready for your event:

  • Wear appropriate clothing.  While the two-person tandem kayaks we use are generally very stable, there is a very strong possibility that you will get wet in some capacity.  We recommend wearing clothing that is either water resistant or that you don't mind getting wet and dirty.  Bringing a spare change of clothes for after the event is also a good idea.
  • Bring sun protection.  There are no shade sources available while kayaking on the water, so please equip yourself accordingly.  Sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses are all excellent ways to protect yourself from the sun's harmful rays, especially given the fact that the water's surface will reflect many of those rays up at you from below.
  • Bring water.  Due to the lack of shade, dehydration and overheating are a potential hazard.  Hydration is key whenever you exert yourself physically, outdoors or otherwise, so please bring potable water to keep yourself hydrated while working.  Bringing water in a reusable bottle is even better!
  • Protect your valuables.  As mentioned before, you are more than likely to get wet in some capacity during your event.  We recommend taking precautions to protect your more water-sensitive personal belongings (cell phone, wallet, electronics, etc.).  Using a water-resistant container or bag will help protect your items while out on the water, but alternatively you can just choose to keep those items safe in your car.  In any case, we recommend planning ahead for this.

We also recommend arriving 10-15 minutes early.  There may be hikers and other visitors competing for parking that morning, so arriving early will give you enough time to find a parking spot before the event begins.  We may also need assistance moving kayaks and equipment over to the launch site, so arriving early to assist with that effort is appreciated, if possible.

The Conservancy appreciates donations of heavy-duty trash bags, work gloves, neoprene gloves, and paper towels to assist with our habitat restoration projects.  Please encourage your participants to bring a donation item if possible.
